”I’ve still got to put on a show for the fans and I still need to go to The O2 playing well and winning, and I’m glad to be doing that”

MICHAEL SMITH vows he still has “a job to do” and win the Premier League.

The World Champion produced his third successive night win, beating Gerwyn Price in Sheffield on Thursday.

He now goes to Aberdeen next week just three points behind the Welshman in the race for top spot.

But Smith admits he is only focused on winning the title at the O2 later this month.

He said: “It would be nice to finish top of the table for the prestige. I qualified for the Play-Offs last week, but I’ve still got a job to do.

“I’ve still got to put on a show for the fans and I still need to go to The O2 playing well and winning, and I’m glad to be doing that.

“The O2 is different. Gezzy’s never been there, I’ve only been there once, Michael (Van Gerwen) has won it six times.

“It could be nice being number one but I just wanna get on with it and play darts. I want to put on the best performance I can for the paying customers and as long as they go home happy and as long as I go home with that trophy I’m not bothered.”

On Smith’s only previous trip to finals night he was beaten by a re-hot MVG in the final in 2018.

In recent weeks however Smith has dominated the Dutchman. But he added:  “It doesn’t matter what you did yesterday, it’s all about today. I just want to get to the O2 now and showcase my talents.

“Last week I played really well. Apart from the first game I struggled a bit, the 180s were non-existent today.

“It took me 16 weeks last year just to win one and now I’ve won four and I’m still in with a chance of finishing top.

“See Gezzy has been the best player, but I’ve been one of the best for the last three weeks.

“I put in as much practice as I can and as you’ve seen tonight, when the talent has an off-day, the hard work always pulls you through.

“I wasn’t at my best today, but it was just grit and determination that helped me to cross the line.”
