Around The World - May

By Ryan Segal

Like every month should, May started with a European Tour event, as the European Darts Grand Prix took place in Sindelfingen, with Gary Anderson looking to defend his crown.

Cameron Menzies opened up proceedings for Team Unicorn with a solid win against Michael Unterbuchner, before Ross Smith shone on the stage, averaging in excess of 108 to annihilate Paul Krohne 6-0.

On Day Two, it was Gary Anderson who got things underway for Team Unicorn, doing so in incredible style. A 110 average and 9 x 180s saw Gary defeat Gian van Veen in a last leg decider.

Ross Smith followed him into the final day of action, continuing his fine run over Dave Chisnall.

The L16 in Sindelfingen would be 25% Unicorn, as James Wade beat Joe Cullen to progress, and Cameron Menzies went 6/7 on the outer ring to defeat Stephen Bunting.

Gary and James progressed to the Quarter-Finals, defeating Rob Cross and Niels Zonneveld respectively.

The Flying Scotsman then found himself in the L4, courtesy of a battling win over Martin Lukeman, before averaging 106 to thunder past Dirk van Duijvenbode and reach a second consecutive final in Sindelfingen.

And in typical Gary fashion, he became the first player in history to retain the European Darts Grand Prix, whitewashing Andrew Gilding 8-0. A two dart 85 kill secured it, and forged another bit of darting history for one of the greatest of all time.

That weekend also saw a handful of Challenge Tour events take place, with CT11 particularly noteworthy. Henry Coates reached the Final, and Ted Evetts the Semi-Final.

We then welcomed a new member to Team Unicorn, as Jack Langston, AKA The Darts Referee, joined the family.

This was just in time for the Modus Super Series Influencer Event, in which Jack and his doubles partner, Marcel Althaus, reached the Final.

A block of two Players Championship events followed, with the highlight of PC15 being a run to the Quarter-Final from Ross Smith, where he lost despite a 102 average.

Smudger would make the headlines at PC16 - but this time, for jaw dropping reasons.

He progressed to the Quarter-Finals with relative ease, hitting a nine darter in the L128 and averaging 105 in the L64.

But that's when it really began.

He hit a second nine darter of the day against Chris Landman, reeling off three straight legs to win 6-3 and progress to the L8.

The three legs would be the last that he dropped all day, as he recorded whitewash wins in the QF, SF, and F, averaging 98, 105, and 104 along the way in one of the greatest days ever to be played at a floor event.

That's two nine darters. Three ton plus averages (including the L4 and L2), and 24 (TWENTY FOUR) straight legs.

That'll do for a days work, eh?

We then moved towards one of the big moments for darts in 2025 - the launch of the Eclipse Ultra 2.0.

The finest board on the market, with Black Venom Spider anti-glare technology, Symetrical Graphics for identical rotations, Abyss Printing for ultra-high contrast segments, Madagascan Grade A natural self-healing sisal - and so much more which altogether make it the ultimate dart board.

We then cast our eyes to Rosmalen for the Dutch Darts Championship. Cameron Menzies survived a handful of match darts to overcome Wesley Plaisier in a nail biter, winning 6-5 in a close affair.

Ross Smith reached the L16, averaging just shy of 100 against Raymond van Barneveld in his best showing of the event.

Following that, we were delighted to announce a long term extension to the contract of Tom Sykes. The Castleford based thrower has already achieved so much since joining our ranks, and we're excited for what lies ahead.

To conclude May and enter June, we had the Dutch Darts Championship. Cameron Menzies was once again the first member of Team Unicorn in the winners circle, beating Kim Huybrechts 6-4.

He then backed that up with a 6-5 win over Dave Chisnall, hitting six of his nine darts at double to progress.

He was joined in the final day by The Machine, James Wade, as he annihilated Lukas Wenig, taking out a 150 in the opening leg en route to winning 6-0.

Cammy would progress to his third career ET Quarter-Final, beating Ritchie Edhouse 6-3, before having his run ended.

That same weekend, in Canada, Irina Armstrong was flying the flag for Team Unicorn, winning the Toronto Area cricket, and finishing runner up to Deta Hedman in the Toronto Area Open, strengthening her hopes of a Lakeside return.
