Royal acclaim for Wade

JAMES WADE rubbed shoulders with royalty after receiving an invitation to a Buckingham Palace garden party hosted by the King.
‘The Machine’ earned the honour through his contribution to the community after extensive charity work supporting Bipolar UK.
Wade, a 10-time major winner, has been an ambassador for the charity since 2016, spreading awareness of Bipolar alongside his decorated career.
The World No.10 took up the invitation with his wife Sammi to meet King Charles in an event dedicated to others who offer outstanding service to their communities.
He said on X after the party: “Apart from Samantha [and his children] this has got to be up there with the most special and memorable moment of my life.
“A day to remember. God save the King.”
Former Premier League champion Wade was diagnosed with bipolar himself in 2012.
And Wade explained why it mattered.
He said: “I now understand better why I have outbursts and sometimes say things I shouldn’t. It hasn’t helped me prepare for matches differently though.
“My wife and my management team try to help in that respect, but you know the saying; ‘you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink’? That’s me.
“I am a little calmer and definitely not as hot-headed as I used to be, and I will listen to their advice – which I wouldn’t have done ten years ago.
“But most of the time I am still my own worst enemy. Even with the diagnosis, I still don’t know how to manage myself emotionally, but I am what I am, I’m 41 and I don’t think I’m going to change now.”
Wade has lifted the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix and European Championship during his illustrious career.
The Surrey thrower is one of the best left-handers to grace the sport and achieved a career high ranking of number two in 2010.
He will host a celebrity fundraising day for Bipolar UK on Friday August 22 in Hampshire.
